What is culture? Cristina De Rossi, an anthropologist, says, “Culture encompasses religion, food, what we wear, how we wear it, our language, marriage, music, what we believe is right or wrong, how we sit at the table, how we greet visitors, how we behave with loved ones, and a million other things.” Culture has a pretty powerful effect on those living in it. Culture shapes the way you think and act in your everyday life. There is a mainstream culture in our society. If you don‘t follow the mainstream culture you become an alien and a stranger. So people usually follow the mainstream culture.
Have you ever tried not to follow or not get along with the mainstream culture? Is it possible? Sure it is possible if you have confidence and courage about this new way of life that you want to practice. Throughout history, there have always been groups of people who rejected mainstream cultural ideas and embraced a contradictory culture, a new way of life. They made a counterculture
to change the world. We know Jesus, a man who lived in Israel about 2000 years ago. He didn‘t follow the mainstream culture of his society in order to save His people who were in suffering. He made a Counterculture Movement with His followers. He took the Cross and changed the world with the new culture.
We know John Wesley, the founder of Methodist church. He refused to get along with the mainstream culture of his time. He went out from the church to meet people who were not able to come to church on Sunday and delivered the message of our Lord Jesus. He educated underprivileged people and fought against slavery and for human rights. He changed England with a new culture.
Today, we Christians are living in a very diverse world and its mainstream culture oppresses the values of our faith. Because of this we are losing our identity in many ways. Christmas is not the same Christmas that Christians used to celebrate the birthday of Jesus our Lord. Easter became just a cultural holy day without the meaning of the Resurrection. Even among Christians, attending Sunday worship service is becoming a second choice or secondary thing on the list of Sunday activities.
These days we see so many things that bother us because of violence and injustice in this complicated world. We ask questions about how can we live as Christians who follow our Lord Jesus today? Do you just want to live your life following mainstream culture without any question?
What are the Christian values that you learn from our Lord Jesus? How do you want to keep and practice this value in this world? I want to challenge you to make a counterculture with me. Let us remember Jesus our Lord and John Wesley who made a counter culture in order to share the values of our God who loves us. Let us pray together to make a counterculture
for the Kingdom of God.
Love you all in Christ,
