Holidays are coming!  In preparation some of us are making lists.  Some of us are making difficult plans …

Here at MPUMC we are collecting (new or gently used) pocket books and toiletries and other necessities to give as gifts to the women who are getting the assistance they need in order to have a more peaceful holiday this year.

Strengthen Our Sisters is a shelter and supportive service program for homeless, battered women and their dependent children. Food, shelter, clothing, legal, and supportive services, as well as child care, and job training are provided for SOS clients. The women participate in workshops on parenting skills, communication skills, self-esteem, stress management and self-help as well as classes in computer skills, and GED preparation. They are helped by a dedicated advocacy staff to apply for restraining orders, emergency assistance, and permanent housing. The women are supported in their goals toward furthering their education, developing skills, a sense of empowerment, and a positive self-image.

The organization is always tremendously thankful img_4116for these donations. I have seen first hand how some of the women and their children arrive at the shelter-just a few belongings they grabbed as they fled a horrible situation and sought a safe place to stay. To have a purse and toiletries is so important as sometimes these simple items are left behind in an effort to get out quickly.

So ask your friends and family for donations too!  Bring the donations to the church by end of November.  (If you need a pick up please call Church at 201-445-3787.)
